What is your store called?
Artwork by C.E. Downes

How long have you been doing it/what inspired you to start the store (or in your case, making art)?
I have been drawing all my life, but only a few years ago started doing pen-on-canvas work, and only started doing Photoshop prints for the last year or so. I draw a lot of inspiration from Taoism, and the symbolism of the yin yang, which help me to not worry so much about planning each piece, but to just start drawing and know that however it turns out it is still art.

What’s your favorite piece that you are currently selling?
My “I Like Rainy Days” print. It’s very personal to me, since I’m from a place where it rains more often, and I think people in LA should appreciate their rare rainy days as much as the character in the print does.

How has living in Los Angeles inspired your art?
LA has such a great artistic community that I’ve found to be really independent-minded and supportive — at least outside the film industry. I’ve learned a lot about art since moving here, which has helped me expand how I think about and create art.

How has music inspired what you do?
Music is a great source of imagery for me. I’ll hear a song that conjures something in my mind and I’ll think, “It would be fun to draw this in Photoshop and maybe make into a t-shirt.” I’ve only ever sold art at places with live music going on simultaneously, so it kind of feels like I’m part of that world as well. I was also recently asked to do an album cover for the band “Badwater.”

What is your favorite album cover of all time?:
Artistically, my favorite is The Beatles’ white album. It says so much about the band and the music on the album with NO imagery. It says they know the album’s going to be a huge hit without an eye-catching cover — people are buying it because they want the Beatles’ music. It’s also such an eclectic album in terms of musical styles, no image could really handle it, and it really showcases everything the Beatles were capable of, which is why ‘The Beatles’ is a perfectly apt title for the album. Also I think the album cover of the Thompson Twins’ “Into the Gap” is hilarious.

What’s your go to pick me up/get the party started song?
I don’t think I’ve ever been in charge of the music at a party, but I saw “Don’t You Want Me” by The Human League work quite well recently. I think it works because it’s very danceable and everybody knows the chorus.

Christopher will be selling his drawings at the Free For All Festival. Make sure you bring cash and stop by his booth! You can also check him out online at Etsy.com. Click here to visit the store.

How long have you been doing it/what inspired you to start the store?
I’ve always made jewelry since I was little. My mom and aunt are also talented jewelry designers and my dad is a luthier so crafting is in my blood!

What’s your favorite product that you are currently selling?
I made these small delicate necklaces with some sayings on them,so far I wear the one that says “patience” and “passion” a lot..its good to remind myself.

How has living in Los Angeles inspired your store/style?
LA has a lot to offer and the good stuff is somewhat hidden and spread out. Living here requires a lot of patience, like the creative process.

How has music inspired what you do?
Music influences me because I listen to it when I’m making pieces. Just being immersed in something always finds its way into my jewelry..so if I am playing something kind of baroque, folksy, electronic, etc..sometimes I end up making the visual equivalent of that.

Who is your musical style icon?
Alice Coltrane

What’s your go to pick me up/get the party started song?
Anything that would have played at a junior high dance in the early 90′s

Melissa will be selling her handmade jewelry at the Free For All Festival. Make sure you bring cash and stop by her booth! You can also check her out online at Etsy.com. Click here to visit the store.

How long have you been doing it/what inspired you to start the store?
I started the store about 10 months ago. After working in the music business for years and watching the changing face of the entertainment industry and the dwindling money actually making its way into the pockets of the musicians, I decided to get proactive and figure out a unique way to help promote some of my favorite musicians. So, I created this store that sells products that musicians make that aren’t music! It’s a way for them to utilize their other talents to help support themselves and to be able to keep making the music that we all love.

What’s your favorite product that you are currently selling?
I adore Sin Fang Bous’ paintings and I’ve been coveting a pair of Au Revoir Simone’s mittens forever! They have been out of stock for about 5 months but I just got two more pairs in (the last two pairs she is going to make) and they will be sold exclusively at Free For All.

How has living in Los Angeles inspired your store/style?
Los Angeles has inspired everything I do. The musical history of this place and specifically of the canyons is so rich, it’s almost insane! For instance, George Harrison used to live in the same canyon that I do and my favorite thing ever is to go up to this little vista that overlooks the whole neighborhood. You can see the reservoir, where George lived, and it’s just magical. I try to capture that feeling of depth and magic in everything I create and everything I do.

How has music inspired what you do?
Music inspires everything I do. From Whenyouawake.com (named after a Band song), to Sakeofthesong.com (named after a Townes Van Zandt song) to the Free For All Festival, of which I’m one of the promoters.

How long have you been doing it/what inspired you to start the store?
I have been doing it for about 6 months now.  I have always loved old clothes and thrift shopping and thought selling online was something I might like to do.  I was inspired initially by some cute shops on Ebay but then I discovered Etsy which is more of an online community and decided to sell there.

What’s your favorite product that you are currently selling?
A 70s black silk jersey dress with layered pointed hems.  It’s so gypsy Stevie Nicks.

How has living in Los Angeles inspired your store/style?
I’m fascinated by the history and the present day of Los Angeles.  There are so many creative people living here that inspire me everyday.

Has has music inspired what you do?
Music and personal style seem to go hand in hand.  A lot of musicians wear some vintage clothing because they are inspired by some musicians’ style from the past or because they want a unique authentic piece of clothing that expresses some part of them.

Who is your musical style icon?
So hard to pick just one I have so many! …early Patti Smith or 60s Marianne Faithfull.

What’s your go to pick me up/get the party started song?
Neil young is always a personal pick me up

Teresa Sotomayor will be selling select vintage pieces at the Free For All Festival. Make sure you bring cash and stop by her booth! You can also check her out online at Etsy.com. Click here to visit the store.

We are very happy to announce that the Lake Street Creamery Truck will be parking at the Free For All Festival. Check out some selections from their menu below and be sure to stop by their website to find out more about their homemade artisan ice cream concoctions.

Flavors (all scoops served in waffle bowls)

Donut: The fresh, natural taste of cake donut — now in ice cream form.

Aztec Sacrifice: Abuse your face with hot, spicy chocolate in the tradition of the Precolumbian Americas. Made with Ghiradelli chocolate, chiles, cayenne, and the blood of a thousand virgins.

California Zephyr: The breezy flavor of Tahitian vanilla, fresh Meyer lemon, and bits of fresh mint leaves.

Pancake Breakfast: Cakey, satisfying flapjacks, pure maple syrup, and bits of real bacon, springkles with fresh-ground peaberry coffee. Not for vegetarians or the excitable.

Black Jack: It’s black licorice. Deal with it.

Holiday Chocolate: Ghirardelli chocolate with the cozy flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, tahitian vanilla, and biths of fresh-ground ginger.

Floats (Choose any drink and pass to server to combine with any flavor. But here are some suggested Float pairings):

Glazed Donut: Donut and Cream Soda

Jelly Donut: Donut and Black Cherry Soda

Orange Blossom: California Zephyr and Orange Cream Soda

Weird Creep: Black Jack and Grape Soda

What is your store called?
Rya Lee Vintage. My older sister’s name is Rya Lee and Lee is after my grandmother, so it has family specialness.

How long have you been doing it/what inspired you to start the store?
I’ve been buying and wearing vintage since high school. I grew up in Orange County and felt I didn’t really fit in with the mainstream surfer girl aesthetic down there. My older brothers shopped at thrift stores so it was something I started doing that made me feel “cool” and anti-establishment, haha. I started the etsy shop a couple years ago after buying lots of great vintage stuff from sellers there, and feeling like I needed a creative outlet for my thrift shopping habit.

What’s your favorite product that you are currently selling?
Ooo, definitely the Incredible Mod Orange and Blue Plaid Dress. I found it at the goodwill on Beverly and it’s one of my favorite finds, ever.

How has living in Los Angeles inspired your store/style?
LA is so vast and varied, I think that has inspired me more than anything. Vintage comes in so many flavors – mod, hippie, 80s, the 90s coming back now with floral baby doll dresses and doc martin’s, and I love it all. There’s no one era or style I stick too. LA girls have great style and I love to just observe people at concerts and on the street, I get lots of ideas. Plus you can’t beat the sheer number of thrift shops in this city, and I scour them all.

How has music inspired what you do?
I think my taste in music is a lot like my taste in clothes – I’m drawn to anything that evokes a feeling. I love music for how it can transport me to a specific time and place, and vintage does the same. Something as silly as wearing a Jessica McClintock prom dress to an 80s party and singing/yelling along to Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place On Earth” fills me with such joy. Music also inspires me when I work because it’s part of creating a fantasy. I love to have music on when I’m shooting photos with my models and writing listings.

Who is your musical style icon?
Jenny Lewis and Lady Gaga.

Annika Nagy will be selling her vintage finds at the Free For All Festival. Make sure you bring cash and stop by her booth! You can also check her out online at Etsy.com. Click here to visit the store.

Punk Masters

How long have you been doing it/what inspired you to start the store?
I started my line a year ago, sort of in response to what was going on with the failing economy, everyone I know losing their jobs. I just felt it was time to take control and do it myself! I’ve always been obsessed with the art of the t-shirt (I live in t-shirts!) and I wanted to do something that was cool and unique but affordable.

What’s your favorite product that you sell?
This is hard, it would be the equivalent of picking your favorite child! BUT if I had to, I’m really loving my “L’Esprit Nouveau” shirt. I just experimented with a gradient print (from blue fading into red) on the image and it looks fantastic! (I’ll have this one on Sunday!)

How has living in Los Angeles inspired your store/style?
So much of my inspiration has come from the people that I’ve had the good fortune of working with here in LA. I’ve worked with John Taylor (who lives here) and Duran Duran doing album art and merchandise since I moved here 14 years ago, and I freelanced for LA-based Juicy Couture for 9 years creating graphics for their men’s and women’s lines. The individuals I worked with have been some of the most fun, creative people I’ve been around – and that gave me the confidence to start me own thing!

Has music inspired what you do?
Always! I’ve been obsessed with music since I was a kid. I grew up wanting to design album art, and the merchandise booth at every concert I went to was like a visual overload for me! Music plays a huge part in my art and design today, and if you look at a lot of my t-shirts I suppose it’s pretty obvious!

Who is your music style icon?
Well my teenaged self would have answered Duran Duran because their style, image and art definitely influenced me in wanting to become a designer. It was their album covers and packaging that made me want to design for music…. and then that morphed into t-shirts and clothing!

What’s your go to pick me up/get the party started song?
Hmmm, “Good Times” – Chic, “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” – Michael Jackson.. or anything by Daft Punk!

Patty Palazzo from Punk Masters will be selling her shirts and tote bags at the Free For All Festival. Make sure you bring cash and stop by her booth! You can also check her out online at Etsy.com. Click here to visit the store.

We made an exclusive mixtape for the LA Times’ music site Pop And Hiss of all of the bands performing at the Free For All Festival. You can download it here. Enjoy!
